Chukotka

Northern nature and the border of the hemispheres

If you're interested in the Russian North, aren't afraid of harsh conditions, and dream of feeling like a pioneer, welcome to Chukotka! This tourist destination will be of interest to anyone who collects important geographic markers on their personal map. The continent's (and our country's) most inland point, Cape Dezhnev, is located here. In Chukotka, you can also cross the 180th meridian—the boundary between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres—and visit the location where this boundary intersects with the Arctic Circle. And all this is surrounded by restrained, sometimes harsh, but incredibly beautiful nature. Snow-capped mountains and rolling hills, cold waves and mysterious tundra, incredibly picturesque lakes hidden in hard-to-reach places, and panoramic views stretching to the horizon from rocky capes.

In Chukotka, you'll visit reindeer herders and whalers, sample the freshest red caviar in a fishing village, hear mesmerizing throat singing, and learn about life in villages built in permafrost. It's like a journey to another world, one that will forever remain one of your most vivid and extraordinary memories.

Places of attraction

Anadyr,
the capital of Chukotka and the region's largest seaport, awaits you with the austere life and incredible charm of a northern city, an introduction to the culture of indigenous peoples, and a stunningly beautiful wooden cathedral. Anadyr is the starting point for all Chukotka itineraries, and it's definitely worth a day or two of your time.

Egvekinot
is a village located beyond the 180th meridian—that is, in the Western Hemisphere! Egvekinot itself is surprisingly cozy, which is unexpected for such a remote settlement. The surrounding area boasts many interesting attractions, from a new ethnopark on a picturesque cape to the intersection of the 180th meridian.

It's impossible to visit Chukotka without crossing two crucial geographic boundaries—

the 180th meridian and the Arctic Circle Lake Ravkergygytgyn,
"Transparent Lake," has an incredible name. It's a truly beautiful place with emerald-green waters reflecting the surrounding slopes. The mountains here are an unusual shade, as if flecked with rust, and the local landscape can safely be called one of the most picturesque spots in Chukotka.

Gudym is
an abandoned military base and military town. This place never appeared on maps, as Gudym was classified during the Cold War. The settlement was finally abandoned by the military in 2002. Today, you can simply stroll through the empty streets and decaying buildings or descend into the mines.

Cape Dezhnev
is the easternmost point of Russia and Eurasia. Not far from the cape, two oceans meet, and the North American coast is just 85 km away! This stunning cape is difficult to reach, meaning you'll be one of the few travelers to reach it. All around are cliffs, bird colonies, walruses, and whales.

Lorino
, the "Whaling Capital," is a village populated by the indigenous peoples of Chukotka, for whom whaling is a vital part of their daily lives. Here, you can take to the sea to witness a whale hunt, visit bone carvers, and admire their craftsmanship. The village's surroundings are also home to famous hot springs.

The Masik settlement
is perhaps the oldest traditional settlement in Chukotka, abandoned by its inhabitants over a century ago. Because Masik is located in a remote area, the buildings haven't completely collapsed: here you can see the ruins of residential and utility buildings constructed from whale bones and skulls.
