About the tour

Lost islands, secluded bays, volcano hikes, bustling bird colonies, the freshest seafood and culinary master classes, thermal springs and fishing, sea lion rookeries, and thrilling encounters with whales and killer whales... This is an incredibly action-packed expedition that will forever remain etched in your memory, gleaming in hundreds of fantastic photos and videos!

What does the program include?

You'll see the Kuril Islands with their exotic landscapes reminiscent of Japanese prints, and disembark on four of them: Alaid Volcano Island, Paramushir, Simushir, and Onekotan. In some locations, we'll take boat excursions along the coast. For example, we'll visit the bay of Yankich Island, which formed in the caldera of an ancient volcano. You'll get to know not only the landscape and rich flora of the region but also the marine life—killer whales and whales, which will swim close with tour boats during your stay in Krashennikov Bay (and possibly at other stops). You'll also enjoy the noise and hubbub of bird colonies and the rookeries of majestic Steller sea lions—here, in the wild, animals and birds rule the numerous rocky ledges and lush shores. You can also try your luck at sea fishing, catch flounder or halibut, and participate in cooking them, before enjoying dinner from your own catch.

While the expedition program focuses primarily on the Kuril Islands, you'll also enjoy views of Kamchatka: appreciate how fantastic the famous Avachinsky and Koryaksky volcanoes look from the water, and take a walk along Russkaya Bay.

The tour includes trekking: we'll climb Zavaritsky Volcano, reach the "volcano within a volcano" on Onekotan Island, and explore the surroundings of Ebeko Volcano on Paramushir Island. The most challenging trek is a roundtrip of 15 km with elevation gains of up to 600 m. The views at the end of each ascent will fully reward all your efforts!

Accommodation during the tour

Cabins on the ship "Professor Khromov"*

*The tour price is based on accommodation in a Standard cabin. For information on higher-class cabins, please contact the manager.

Throughout the expedition, your cozy cabin will be your home aboard a vessel used for research missions and expedition cruises. The vessel's compact size allows it to navigate places unreachable by bulky cruise ships, allowing you to explore the most picturesque and inaccessible locations. The Professor Khromov was last renovated in 2019 and can accommodate 48 passengers and 22 crew members.
Guests can choose a cabin with a comfortable level of accommodation, from a luxurious suite to an ergonomic standard cabin. All accommodations feature comfortable berths, storage closets, a window, a desk, and a bathroom. The vessel also features two restaurants serving three buffet meals a day, a bar, a cinema, and a library with maritime-themed books. The captain's bridge is open to the public at any time, so you can learn more about the ship's operations and even feel like a member of the crew.

Tour itinerary

More details about the route

Day 1. Exit to the ocean, panoramic views of the volcanoes

The expedition begins in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. At the city port, located in Avacha Bay (the largest natural harbor on the planet!), you'll board the Professor Khromov and take your cabins. Welcome aboard the vessel, which will be your comfortable and safe home for the next nine days! Leaving the bay, we'll head out into the Pacific Ocean. Here, you'll enjoy a breathtaking view of Kamchatka's volcanoes: Avacha, Koryak, Vilyuchinsky, and Kozelsky. From the water, the panorama is especially stunning! We're heading south.

Day 2. Walking near Alaid Volcano

Today you'll see the highest volcano in the Kuril Islands, Alaid (over 2,300 meters above sea level). It's active, with its last recorded activity in 2022. Alaid is incredibly beautiful: a nearly perfect cone rising above the water on Atlasov Island, the northernmost of the Kuril Islands. Geologically, the volcano and the island are identical. We won't make the challenging climb to Alaid's summit, but we'll disembark on safe and comfortable Zodiac boats for a stroll around its base and the side craters—Olympic and Taketomi.

Day 3. Paramushir Island, volcanoes and whales

On the third day, we'll reach Paramushir Island and disembark at Krashennikov Bay. The island is famous for its mountainous terrain and numerous active volcanoes, and the bay is famous for its summertime visits by killer whales and whales. Seeing these majestic creatures of the deep up close is an incredibly emotional experience, leaving some travelers breathless and in tears. We'll take a Zodiac boat ride along the coast, see vast bird colonies and volcanoes, the most beautiful of which is rightfully considered to be Mount Fussa. The panorama of the coast and volcanoes is reminiscent of exquisite and tranquil Japanese prints. By evening, we'll reach Antsiferov Island, home to a large Steller sea lion rookery.

Day 4. Yankich Island and the bay in the volcano crater

We continue our journey and make a stop at Yankic Island. Its incredible landscapes are like a lost world, where you'll feel like explorers: the piercing green of the slopes, the deep azure of the water, the thermal springs off the coast, and the coral reefs. This miniature island is actually an ancient volcano, one of whose walls collapsed, forming a caldera (a cirque-shaped basin). The caldera's flooding created a cozy bay with two tiny islets in the center. Paradise views, the sound of thousands of seabirds, and a sense of absolute harmony with nature await you.

Day 5. Simushir Island, volcano trekking, sea fishing

Today, you'll hike to Zavaritsky Volcano. We'll disembark on the uninhabited island of Simushir—another remote but incredibly beautiful island in the Greater Kuril Islands chain. Here, we'll hike to Zavaritsky Volcano (624 m), where from above, we'll see a flooded caldera that's become a lake. If the weather is clear, you'll also be able to survey the entire central part of the chain. Then, we'll try our luck fishing, where we might catch cod, flounder, and halibut, which we'll, of course, cook on board. Then, we'll head back to Kamchatka.

Day 6. Onekotan and the volcano on the lake

The expedition would be impossible without visiting the amazing island of Onekotan, whose views are rightfully considered some of the most breathtaking of all the Kuril Islands. The most challenging trek of the entire trip awaits you: we head to Krenitsyn Volcano. The roundtrip is 15 km, with an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters. But at the end of the trek, you'll be fully rewarded with a unique landscape: a perfectly conical volcano rises above the tranquil surface of a lake formed in a caldera. This so-called two-tiered "volcano within a volcano" is currently active.

Day 7. Ebeko Volcano on Paramushir Island

We've already visited this island, but today we'll disembark at a completely different part of it. We'll head to the active Ebeko Volcano, where columns of steam rise into the sky and hot springs gush from fumarole fields. We'll also explore the secluded corners of Paramushir Island, which boasts not only volcanoes (there are five active ones, and more than ten if you count the extinct ones!) but also picturesque rivers with blooming banks, waterfalls, quiet lakes, and impenetrable alder thickets. The island has only one settlement, Severo-Kurilsk, but otherwise it offers untouched, mysterious nature.

Day 8. Russkaya Bay, Steller sea lions, and a farewell dinner

Hello, Kamchatka! We'll drop anchor in the famous Russkaya Bay, surrounded by dense forests and rocky slopes. This bay is also renowned for its rich fauna: brown bears often come to its shores, large colonies of various birds nest here, and Steller sea lions rest here. As we head out to the sea lions' resting place, we'll see the rusting hulks of old ships along the way, which, combined with the surrounding splendid natural beauty, create a truly unique atmosphere. A festive dinner awaits you in the evening, sure to evoke the most incredible and vivid memories of your trip.

We say goodbye to "Professor Khromov" and return to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. We can take you to the city center or, if you decide to stay in the region, to your booked hotel.
