Dagestan boasts not only majestic mountains but also ancient villages, remarkably harmoniously blended into the landscape. Far from the big cities, life here is measured and tranquil, and centuries-old traditions are preserved. On this tour, you'll visit Dagestan's most famous and beautiful villages, some of which are now abandoned: Kakhib, Old and New Goor, Gamsutl, Chokh, and even Russia's oldest city, Derbent.
You will visit famous villages of Dagestan, including the ghost village of Gamsutl, Goor, and Kakhib with their mighty watchtowers, and Gunib and Chokh, both steeped in history and rising from the cliffs. Leisurely strolls through ancient streets await you, along with countless beautiful legends and tales of the heroic past of the mountaineers. Abandoned villages, such as Gamsutl or Old Kakhib, hold a special charm. The wind blowing through the ruins, the fragments of the past, and the breathtaking mountain views evoke a slightly melancholy mood and a sense of awe at the inexorable passage of time. This tour will also give you the chance to fully appreciate Dagestan's stunning natural beauty: visit the Sulak Canyon and take a speedboat ride down the Sulak River, descend into the Nokho Caves and the unique underground Saltinsky Waterfall, and capture incredible photos at Trolltunga near Goor.
You'll also enjoy a tour of Derbent, Russia's oldest city, a visit to the ancient citadel of Naryn-Kala, and a trip to the ekranoplan "Lun," frozen in the sands on the Caspian Sea coast. Along with these exciting adventures, you'll learn a lot about the life and culture of Dagestan's indigenous peoples, the region's history, and its significant historical figures. You'll also sample authentic Avar cuisine: unique apricot porridge and hearty khinkali and botishal. One day, you'll dine on the freshest trout, charcoal-grilled to a crisp, golden crust. A kaleidoscope of impressions, Caucasian hospitality, and natural wonders—it's enough to make you fall in love with colorful Dagestan once and for all and want to return again!
The Khadija Guesthouse is located in the picturesque village of Gotsatl Maly, near Makhachkala and its key attractions: Tobot Waterfall, Sulak Canyon, and Karadakh Gorge. The house is immersed in greenery: it is surrounded by a garden with a gazebo for quiet evenings with friends or family. The rooms have been recently renovated in soothing tones. Guests are served delicious homemade breakfasts and dinners.
This cozy hotel is located a short walk from the city beach and park. A room with a simple, classic design, air conditioning, and a TV, impeccable cleanliness, and the warm hospitality you'd expect only in a smaller hotel will make your stay comfortable and relaxing. Guests especially appreciate the friendly and attentive service and the ideal location.

We'll meet at Makhachkala airport and head straight to Dagestan's most recognizable natural landmark, the Sulak Canyon. This incredibly beautiful canyon is also the deepest in Europe. From the Dubki observation deck, you'll see the graceful curves of the canyon, hemmed in by cliffs on all sides, and the sparkle of the piercing turquoise Sulak River flowing far below. You'll dine on freshly caught and grilled trout, and then we'll head to the Nokho Cave complex, which also boasts excellent observation decks. For an additional fee, you can descend into the adits or go bungee jumping. To experience this natural beauty up close, we suggest taking a UAZ car ride down to the Sulak River, to the village of Zubutli, and then embarking on a boat trip. A speedboat will take you to the Weeping Waterfall, a true paradise. In the evening we arrive in the village of Gotsatl Maly and stay in a cozy guest house.

After breakfast at the guesthouse, we'll head to the village that gives this tour its name: the mysterious Old Kakhib, nicknamed the "Dagestani Atlantis" for its inaccessibility and mystical atmosphere. It's one of the oldest auls in Dagestan. During its heyday, Kakhib was renowned for its impregnability; powerful watchtowers successfully held off any invaders. Only once, during the Tatar-Mongol invasion, were its defenses breached. We'll then visit Old Goor, where you'll take dozens of stunning photos on Trolltunga , a ledge every bit as beautiful as its Norwegian "big brother." Goor is also famous for its watchtowers. After lunch in Novy Goor with an Avar family, we'll head to Saltinsky Waterfall. This is an underground waterfall located in a cave. The refraction of light rays falling through a small gorge and the crystal-clear water—a truly fantastic sight. Weather and daylight permitting, we'll then visit the village of Gunib, renowned for its unique microclimate and the role it played during the Caucasian War.

On the third day, we'll visit the legendary ghost village of Gamsutl. This high-mountain village is located in a remote and picturesque spot at an altitude of 1,500 meters. It's inaccessible by car, so we'll walk part of the way, enjoying the surrounding views. The village itself is a mysterious and quiet place, where the ruins of buildings seem to emerge from the cliffs, and only the mountain breeze blows through the streets. After lunch, enjoying beloved dishes of traditional Avar cuisine, we'll drive to the village of Chokh. Situated in a valley and surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides, it creates an atmosphere of solitude and tranquility. Low houses, arranged like terraces, rise from the steep slopes. Fantastic views await you, along with a multitude of local legends and stories about key chapters in history. Here, in this remote area, desperate battles once raged, and the local cliffs bear witness to the incredible heroism of the inhabitants of this small village. In the evening we will go to Derbent, where you will check into a hotel.

You can spend this day as you wish. Stroll through picturesque Derbent and relax on the local beach, or choose any day excursion (for an additional fee): to the Khunzakh Plateau with its canyon and famous waterfall, to the high-mountain village of Kubachi, home to the Dargin people who create amazing silverware, or to the village of Akhty, renowned for its healing springs.

This is the last day of the tour, but many exciting discoveries still await. After breakfast, we'll visit the Lun ekranoplan—a marvel of Soviet engineering, frozen in the sand by the sea like a fantastical spaceship. After a stroll along the shore and taking plenty of atmospheric photos, we'll set off on a tour of Derbent. This ancient city has preserved the charm of an oriental fairytale, and its narrow streets will transport you back in time. We'll visit Derbent's most important landmark, the ancient citadel of Naryn-Kala, whose impressive fortress walls rise above a colorful labyrinth of streets. We'll also visit souvenir shops where you can buy gifts and treats for your loved ones. Transfer to Makhachkala, the train station, and the airport will be included. See you again!
The group will meet with the guide on the first day before 12:00 PM. For the last day of the program, we recommend purchasing tickets for departure after 6:00 PM.
