Bishkek
The capital and starting point for most routes, Bishkek combines Soviet architecture, wide avenues, and proximity to mountains visible from virtually anywhere in the city. Bishkek boasts museums and leafy boulevards, as well as the opportunity to quickly get out into nature—beautiful gorges are just an hour's drive away.
Ala-Archa Park
A natural park in the Tien Shan Mountains, just 40 km from Bishkek, Ala-Archa boasts alpine landscapes and scenic trails of varying difficulty. It is popular for trekking, day trips, and picnics with breathtaking panoramas: here you can see raging rivers, coniferous forests, glaciers, and snow-capped peaks.
Issyk-Kul
One of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, it remains ice-free year-round thanks to its depth and brackish water. Surrounded by the majestic Tien Shan mountain ranges, the lake offers a combination of sandy beach relaxation, natural and cultural itineraries to suit every taste, and even treatments with mineral water and therapeutic mud.
Burana Tower
One of the few surviving monuments from the Karakhanid era is an 11th-century minaret located on the site of the ancient city of Balasagun. The complex is complemented by stone balbal statues and an open-air museum offering insight into the region's medieval history, when the Great Silk Road passed through these lands.
Chon-Kemin Valley
A picturesque valley between the Kungei and Zailiyskiy Alatau ranges, it offers a captivating blend of mountains, meadows, and traditional Kyrgyz settlements. The region is ideal for ecotourism, horseback riding, easy trekking, and exploring rural life off the beaten track. Rafting is also possible here.
Kok-Moinok Canyons
A system of narrow canyons with reddish rock walls and winding trails, located near the Boom Gorge. The location boasts unusual terrain features and is ideal for short hikes and photo stops en route from the capital of Kyrgyzstan to the legendary Issyk-Kul.
Fairy Tale Canyon
A small and easily accessible, yet extremely dramatic canyon on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. It's known for its vibrant clay formations reminiscent of castles and fantastical figures—true sculptures crafted by nature itself. The diversity of shapes and shades makes the place especially popular for walks and photo sessions.
Karakol
This cozy small town at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul is an excellent base for mountain treks and expeditions. Karakol boasts a wooden Orthodox church built in 1869 and a colorful Dungan mosque, constructed without a single nail. It is also home to a ski resort with excellent freeriding slopes.
Barskoon Gorge
A mountain gorge on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. Its main attraction is a cascade of waterfalls, each with a poetic name: "Tears of a Leopard," "Champagne Splashes," and others. Routes to high-mountain plateaus and glaciers lead here, and a monument to Yuri Gagarin, who visited the area, is also located here.
Jety-Oguz Gorge
One of Kyrgyzstan's most famous gorges. Its name translates as "Seven Bulls": the reddish rock formations resemble reclining animals. Vivid geological formations, pine forests and green pastures, trekking routes, the 40-meter-high "Maiden's Tears" waterfall, and the "Broken Heart" rock await you.
Ak-Suu River
A mountain river with crystal-clear, icy waters and a turbulent current, flowing through the eponymous gorge near Karakol. The area attracts nature lovers with hot springs, pine forests, a deep lake with a sacred history, and trails leading to truly alpine landscapes.
Chon-Ak-Suu Valley
Also known as Grigorievskoye Gorge, it's one of the most accessible and picturesque gorges on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul: green slopes, forests of rare Tien Shan spruce, and three high-mountain lakes. It's a popular spot for picnics, hikes, and nature excursions, offering the chance to witness nomadic life. It's worth a visit during your stay in Issyk-Kul.
Cholpon-Ata
A resort town with well-developed infrastructure and convenient beaches. The surrounding area is home to one of the region's largest complexes of petroglyphs—Bronze Age stone carvings. This "open-air museum" contains approximately 5,000 stone carvings, some of which are up to 4,000 years old.
Ak-Bermet springs
Thermal springs in the mountains, renowned for their mineral-rich water and tranquil atmosphere. There are seven pools with water temperatures ranging from 37 to 44 degrees Celsius. A visit to the springs can be the perfect respite from active hiking: swimming against the backdrop of the mountain scenery is part of a relaxing and wellness experience.
